It wasn't a lie. How do we know? Everyone having access to basic astronomic equipment - along with a standard laser used for calculation in astronomy - can measure the distance between Earth and the Moon. How? By directing the laser beam at a mirror which was left on the Moon by Apollo team. Nuff said.
